Question from Stacey I need to replace carpeting and will use hardwood from Lumber Liquidators, since it is on your list. I thought the Bellawood would be best for children, however, I’ve recently read bad reviews of the Bellawood. It is more expensive and supposedly has multiple coats of urethane to make it stronger than other hardwood, but that’s not what the reviews state. Do you know anything about the Bellawood, or what did you use? We were told there is plywood underneath the carpeting. Do you see a problem with this? Also, LL recommended certain underlayments for sound absorption, moisture protection, insulationbut they do not seem acceptable to me.

One (Eco Silent Sound HD) is made of “recycled granulated rubber tires and high-density polyurethane foam.” I’m not sure what the Bellawood Premium Underlayment is made of, but it does state it contains “94% post industrial/pre-consumer fibers.” It is LEED compliant and Indoor Air Quality Certified through SCS. Do we need some underlayment at all? Debra’s Answer I’ve been laying hardwood flooring for more than twenty years and I’ve used various brands. In my experience there is little difference between them because the finish gets baked on and outgasses during the heating process. The only thing I think is important from a toxics viewpoint is to choose a solid wood flooring and NOT laminate or engineered, which contain various adhesives. I’ve not used Bellawood, for no other reason than it was more expensive. I don’t see that plywood under the carpeting would be a problem.

A Guide to Installing Flooring Underlayment A Guide to Installing Flooring Underlayment A good flooring underlayment will help to deaden the sound of the room and will also serve as a water barrier. This added protection will help guard against the floor warping in the future. Laminates having pre-attached padding can also be installed over an underlayment. When doing so, Lumber Liquidators recommends the use of Bellawood Platinum, Bellawood Premium, Quiet Walk or the Eco Silent Sound underlayment.

I would just remove the carpeting and the pad and anything else that is there down to the plywood. If you want to seal the plywood before you lay the flooring, you could, but it’s probably not necessary. I have never used any underlayments. I just glue the flooring to the subfloor, whatever it is.

I used a continuous layer of. I pour a puddle on the floor and spread it with a mortar spreader (a metal rectangle with a handle and jagged edges) to get an even layer. Then you lay the hardwood planks or tiles in the glue and it seals the plywood at the same time. That’s exactly how I do it. Hello Debra, I am also wondering if you have ever heard of using nails only instead of any glues to lay Hardwood flooring? If so, what are the pros & cons of nails only???

Thank You for this timely post 🙂 We are also looking into replacing carpet to hardwood floors. Blessings COMMENT FROM DEBRA: Nails only is fine, I have heard of people doing that. However, you can’t do on a cement slab floor because you can’t nail into the cement. I think in my case I just started using white and yellow glue and it worked so well and was so nontoxic, I just use that. I imagine it would be simpler to use glue than nails.
