I haven't listened to the new sets but, for what is worth, the old ones have much higher dynamic range. Thanks for the comparison comments guys. I am probably going to get these - if only for the bonus tracks (I already own the Linn CDs). Shame about 'Hats' being distorted. I am currently part way through a mammoth ripping project of all my CDs to Hard Drive for my Squeezebox Touch.

The original 'Hats' CD has pre-emphasis and I was not looking forward to trying to use the various complicated procedures necessary to rip the CD to FLAC (I don't use ITunes). I thought if the new 'Hats' was a good one I would rip that instead. Thanks for the comparison comments guys. Click to expand. My copies arrived today and I just gave them a fairly thorough listen. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure they're clipped. What's more of a concern is that there is very AUDIBLE distortion on all tracks - less of a problem on the livelier ones but it does get very annoying on the quieter ones - 'Let's Go Out Tonight' (unlistenable from 2:15 onwards), '7 AM' (4:00 onwards) and 'From A Late Night Train' (2:49 and 3:29 being the most obvious ones). Surely this could have been avoided if someone hadn't tampered with the volume controls quite as much - which is especially frustrating since they got it right with 'A Walk Across The Rooftops'.

Otherwise both remasters offer superior tonality and detail. My copies arrived today and I just gave them a fairly thorough listen. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure they're clipped. Boy was it hard work! I started with the main albums. I ended up using a Command Prompt program called Sox to cope with the Pre-Emphasis on 'Hats'.

Good job I remembered some of my Dos stuff stuff from the 80s! Then I moved onto 'High' and found that it had some form of Copy Protection. As soon as I put the disc in the drive it just spun around with no access to the files. I tried the old hold Shift Key down while putting the disk in the drive trick but that didn't work. In the end I resorted to downloading the Flac's from elsewhere (naughty I know but I figured I had bought the CD anyway). According to some stuff I found on the Net 'High' was released with Copy Protection by mistake - it was only supposed to be the Promo version that was Copy Protected. However, it was worth all the effort as I now have all the original Albums, all UK CD singles and a separate folder for all the rare tracks (including all the ones that should have been on these Deluxe Sets!).
